As a golf course, Lanang may have been long extinct. But the men who have made it their home turf are very much alive and leading the Sportswriters division of the 33rd Philippine Airlines Seniors Interclub golf team championships which got underway on Wednesday at the Alta Vista Golf Club, a mountain course designed by the legendary 'Black Knight' Gary Player.
The Lanang Seniors carded an aggregate 111 total to take a three-point lead over joint second placer Davao City Golf Club and Bay Area Golf Association (BAGO) 2.
Paul Anthony Dakudao, whose family owned the vast 18-hole course before it was acquired by SM and built into the now SM Lanang mall, paced Lanang with 40 points in the Molave System of scoring while Raymond Salvador added 36 and Andrew Pineda 35. The 25 of Roberto Dakudao did not count.
Davao City Golf Club made it a 1-2 early leaderboard for Davao squads as the Matina-based swingers fired 108 points on Menilio Narciso's 38, Francisco Jr/Vic Noble's 36 and Elmer Basilia's 34. Not counting was Isagani Gascal's 31. BAGO 2 also had 108 to tie Davao for second place.
The Molave scoring system calls for a four-to-play, three-to-count format with par amounting to 3 points and regulation play is equivalent to 54 points. A record field of 108 teams is seeing action in the four-day event that will also be played at the Club Filipino de Cebu.
The field is divided into five divisions: Championship, Founders, Aviator, Sportswriters and Friendship. Rancho Palos Verdes and Apo Golf are still playing in the Aviator and Founders divisions, respectively, as of presstime.
