Games 2018: Perth boxer Caitlin Parker takes out gold medal fancy

Perth boxer Caitlin Parker is in the box seat to win Commonwealth Games boxing medal for Australia after today smashing her way past gold medal fancy Natasha Gale at the Oxenford Studios.

Parker, driven by the disappointment of narrowly missing selection for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, had the fight on her terms in the opening seconds after landing a heavy straight right hand to the face of the English boxer.

It rocked Gale, who proceeded to hold regularly through the opening two rounds. She was deducted a point for holding in the second round as Parker stormed to a unanimous verdict from the judges.

“She was the favourite for the division so to get her out of the way is awesome,” an elated Parker said immediately after her fight.

“There was a lot of holding behind the next and stuff, but I wasn’t going to hold it because it was wasting my legs. I was very nervous because this was my first big competition in front of a home crowd.

“But to fight in front of them was fantastic. It really was a pump-up.”
